Harry Maguire is closing in on his £85m switch to Old Trafford – with boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirming he is in his plans to start against Chelsea on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Recently-retired Van Persie, 35, believes the closest his old side can get to world-class football this season is by watching their rivals on TV. Ahead of the Community Shield, BT Sport pundit Van Persie said: “If you look at City and Liverpool, they are the best teams not only in England but also in Europe. “Even if you look at teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, in terms of playing from a philosophy of the coach, I think they’re the best teams.”
  • 4 hours agoAugust 3, 2019MORE on Paul Pogba’s absence from today’s final pre-season game AND that injury… Solskjaer says the French midfielder should be available for the first game of the new campaign next Sunday against Chelsea. Red Devils chief said: “He isn’t injured, he’s just in some pain and I wasn’t going to risk anything this weekend with only eight days to go before the first game. “I knew he wouldn’t be travelling to Cardiff because I spoke to him about it after training on Friday and he wasn’t right. “He’ll probably be back in training early next week and I hope he should be OK for Chelsea.”

The wantaway Belgian was immediately ordered to remove the post on Friday night. Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “Put it this way, I’ve spoken to Rom about it and now it’s case closed.”

England international Maguire underwent a medical ahead of his £85million move from Leicester today. And United boss Solskjaer is already planning for the world’s most expensive defender to go straight into his team for the big Premier League kick-off. He said: “I’ve got a good idea of my starting line-up for Chelsea and Harry has played a few games over the summer so he should be ready. We’ll just have to assess him if and when. “We’ve just got the last little details to get over the line and hopefully we can announce something very soon.”

It was believed to be an attempt to push through a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. But Solskjaer said: “I have no doubt, Paul Pogba will stay at Manchester United this summer.”

Marcus Rashford initially gave United the lead with a stunning goal in the first half, while Suso scored from distance to level things up before half time. In the second half, Victor Lindelof scored an own goal to give Milan the lead, while Jesse Lingard buried the ball into the bottom corner from inside the box to equalise. The contest will now be decided by penalties.

The Belgian was firing back at his critics who teased him for his “lack of pace”, as the statistics showed the striker was the second fastest player at the club, with only pacy full-back Diogo Dalot in front of Lukaku. At the other end of the spectrum, Luke Shaw and Juan Mata were recorded as the two slowest players at the club, which prompted both to respond on twitter. Mata said: “Thanks for finally showing the world that I’m quicker than @LukeShaw23 bro.” The England defender then responded by saying: “They only wanted me to go 70 per cent don’t let me start speaking on you boy.”

After an £80m transfer fee has been agreed, a vehicle thought to have the England international inside has arrived at United’s Carrington training ground, claims the Daily Express. The player will become the most expensive defender of all time if the move is successfully completed.

According to Sky Sports Italia, it was after the 25-year-old held talks with manager Maurizio Sarri on Thursday that he was asked to train alone. Man Utd are on the brink of finally landing No1 target Maguire, after months of chasing, as they were forced to stump up £85m – a figure dubbed an “incredible deal” by Brendan Rodgers. Maguire, 26, will now become the most expensive defender in history, eclipsing the £75m Liverpool spent on Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.
  • 14 hours agoAugust 3, 2019MANCHESTER UNITED are eyeing a swoop for Ajax sensation David Neres in a £46million deal, as their transfer spree continues. The Brazilian winger, 22, was one of a host of stars from the Dutch giants to light up the Champions League last term. Now, United are keen to add another out-and-out winger and are looking at Neres, as the mass Ajax exodus rages on – with Matthijs De Ligt just one 2018-19 hero to have left. However, Ajax are demanding around £70m to £80m, as they will owe Neres’ old club, Santos, 23 per cent of the deal, according to reports. And the Eredivisie champions are said to have offered Neres a one-year contract extension in order to tempt him into staying. With Man Utd splashing out £85m to bring in Harry Maguire, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unlikely to have the budget to sign Neres for any more than around £50m.
